Pariah Peels
Pariah Peels is an experimental sound artist who has been performing in Indianapolis for the past 5 years. Longtime jack of all trades, his musical influences range from art rock to electronic dance.
Earlier this year, The New American Left embraced dystopian tropes skittered with fleeting euphoria. This ambience was identified by cacophonous landscapes of uncertainty generated by churning guitar loops and an anthem of a guitar riff in the middle to lighten it up a bit.
As his work on The New American Left led to a rendezvous of live instrumentation and sound design, his new work, Soft Cancel continues on with the same affair.
Informed by a summertime obsession with IDM and other forms of dance music, Soft Cancel, is realized by it’s core, the Korg ESX-1 sampler. Many of the dance beats are programmed here and abstracted by multiple effects chains, some from guitar pedals and some from sound design created through Ableton Live. Returning to the desolate themes of The New American Left, the piece devolves into musique concrete finding a pulse in the rough sounds of the city. Finally landing at a retro futuristic industrial motif harkening to sci-fi before returning to the groove box to ride the piece out with another ode to danceable rhythms. This final stretch embraces a faster tempo calling out to footwork.
He is currently studying for his Bachelor of Science in Music Technology degree at IUPUI.
